Tips on Looking After YOU!!!
This is a guest Blog Post from a friend, who is a Mom, Business Owner and Fitness Fanatic.!!!!
So on June 29th, 2019 I did something scary: I gave birth to my daughter.
On September 19th, 2019, almost three months after having Sloane I did something ELSE scary:
I decided to dive into healthy lifestyle coaching while on maternity leave.
So let me back up just a bit to give you an idea of WHO I AM and if I have street cred (if any) ;)
Basketball hit me like a sack of potatoes when I was 10 years old – I didn’t see it coming, I didn’t know how much I’d love it and how much I’d thrive in a team environment. I didn’t know the lessons and confidence I’d learn from this sport and I am forever thankful it took me out of my shyness and brought me into my light. After my competitive university basketball days came to a close, I decided to try out a new sport a few years later that was totally out of my wheelhouse. It was an individual sport, technical, scary and exhilarating in so many ways – triathlons. Triathlons pushed me to my limits and challenged me more mentally and physically than I’d ever been challenged before. I was noticing fellow triathletes getting injured around me so I decided to join a Pilates studio for cross-training purposes and to prevent injury. That led me to become a certified RIO Method Pilates instructor and now a healthy lifestyle coach. There are other paths that go unmentioned here, but you get the gist!
Having a daughter gave me MORE appreciation and completely opened my eyes (well…maybe half open because of some sleepless nights) to how important it was for me to be healthy physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally for not only my husband and I, but for her as well. At seven months post-partum, I realize more than ever how much I want to help support other women to be the healthiest versions of themselves as they juggle the world on their shoulders and be god damn badasses at it every day!! In particular, I love supporting busy moms in finding their health and fitness again so they can feel strong, happy and let their lights shine bright -- causing a trickle-down effect to those they surround themselves with.
Here’s some digestible tidbits you can incorporate this season to make sure you’re able to show up for YOU in the way you want to in this world:
1. FUEL YOUR BODY WITH THE COMFORT IT NEEDS o
Warm meals that soothe the soul AND give you a punch of flavor for an energy boost? Those are ZEE BEST! There can be a misconception around comfort food that it’s “bad” or “unhealthy” food, but when you visualize it as warm, hearty, nutrient dense food that keeps your mind and body satiated, then this helps you stick to whole foods in your kitchen.
2. FUEL YOUR BODY WITH THE MOVEMENT IT NEEDS BOTH INDOORS AND OUTDOORS o
Getting outside helps the mental, spiritual and emotional being that lives inside you. Get away from the mindset that you are going to hibernate for the winter…we aren’t bears!! A 15-30 minute power walk can do wonders and perhaps you turn it into a family/friend weekly activity. o If you are a gym/studio goer or not, don’t let bad weather be the reason you don’t get movement in to your day. Working out in your home is a GREAT option and there are some great online platforms out there that have everything you need from stretching, cardio, HIIT, yoga, Pilates and dance to strength, martial arts or you name it – they’ll give you the accountability you need and don’t underestimate the results you can get as well.
3. WATER, WATER, HYDRATION, WATER… o
I know water is an obvious one, but I bet you aren’t drinking enough -- especially during the winter. Do me a favor and calculate what half your weight is in ounces. For example, if you are 150lbs, half your weight in ounces is 75 ounces (or 2.2 litres). THIS is how much water you should be drinking every day. In the winter we tend to drink less because we feel cold and often don’t feel the effects of dehydration as much as we do in the summer, so PLEASE go purchase a 1 or 2 litre water bottle to keep at home, at your work, wherever you spend most of your day so you can easily grab for it. It also helps save five to ten back and forths to the sink or water cooler for refills.
